Jeffrey Yang is the author of four poetry books: Line and Light; Hey, Marfa (winner of the Southwest Book Award and a 2014 New York Times Best Book of the Year); Vanishing-Line; and An Aquarium (winner of the PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award). He is the translator of Bei Dao’s Sidetracks (chosen as a 2024 Best Book of the Year by TIME, NPR, and The New Yorker) and his autobiography City Gate, Open Up. He has edited the poetry anthologies Birds, Beasts, and Seas and Time of Grief; a volume of Walt Whitman’s writings, The Sea Is a Continual Miracle; an expanded edition of Mary Oppen’s Meaning a Life, and, with Natasha Wimmer, the anthology Some Kind of Beautiful Signal. His essays have appeared in magazines such as The Paris Review, Chicago Review, Harvard Review, The New Yorker, Poetry, and The Wenshan Review of Literature and Culture. Yang has received fellowships from the DAAD artists-in-Berlin program, the Lannan Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Omina Freundeshilfe Foundation. His collaboration with Susie Ibarra “In Light of Water, Birds Take Flight” was performed with a participatory orchestra at Dia Beacon. He is the Editor-at-Large for New Directions Publishing, and for over a decade was also a senior editor at New York Review Books.
